We understand that counselling is a whole new process to most of us and there must be some questions popping up in your mind regarding the process. We have tried to answer a few FAQs for you and if you have some other doubts or questions, you can visit us and clear your doubts.

Frequently asked questions regarding counselling?

Question: Who can visit a Counsellor?

Anybody can visit a Counsellor. Every human being has a right to be heard. In addition, some people seek Counselling services to improve their already great lives. Therefore, anybody with a willingness to explore any area of life can benefit from meeting a counsellor.

Question: How do I book an appointment?

You can mail us at counselling@iitram.ac.in or contact us on 079-67775433 and take an appointment between 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on all weekdays except Saturday and Sunday.

Question: Can I meet the Counsellor on Saturday or Sunday?

It is advisable to meet the Counsellor from Monday to Friday, but if there is some kind of emergency, you can always mail us or contact us with your concerns, and we will try to reach you as soon as possible.

Question: Is the Counselling service paid or free of charge?

The Counselling service being offered by the institute is free of charge for all the students of IITRAM.

Question: Will the information I share be kept confidential?

All information that you share will be kept confidential. This is an extremely important ethical guideline for a Counsellor where no information can be disclosed to another person without your consent. Every Counsellor is ethically bound to maintain confidentiality except in situations where there is risk of self-harm, harm to others or child abuse.

Question: How many times am I required to meet the Counsellor?

Your frequency of sessions depends upon the gravity of your issues which can be mutually decided by you and the Counsellor. Counselling is a continuous process where a counsellor uses a psychological framework to facilitate insight and awareness to help you discover your own answers. This process takes anywhere between 4-20 sessions depending upon your needs.

Question: Will my problems be solved immediately?

The goal of counselling is “NOT” to fix your problem immediately. There are no quick fixes when it comes to mental health. Counsellors are professionals trained with skills and competencies that facilitate an individual to gain awareness about themselves and their problems and work towards their solutions by setting up goals.

Question: Do visiting the Counsellor means that I’m weak?

No, it takes a lot of courage to come forward and share your problems with some stranger. Therefore, those who visit Counsellor are not weak but seeking counseling is a way to proactively manage your problems.

Question: What if the counsellor is prejudiced or biased?

Counsellors are ethically bound to be unbiased, non-judgmental and neutral. A counsellor will never judge or criticize you. Anything you feel you need or want to say is fine to be discussed with the Counsellor.
